Instagram Analytics: Know Your Metrics

It only takes a simple misinterpretation of Instagram Analytics terms to completely throw off your insights.

So when it comes to getting the most out of your Instagram Analytics, it’s always best to start with the basics first.

Since Instagram and its engagement measures have become a part of everyday vernacular, you can easily confuse definitions of terms that we all use regularly.

1. Instagram Analytics Glossary: Profile

  • Following: The number of accounts that you follow

  • Followers: The number of accounts following you 

  • Clicks to email: the number of times that users have tapped the email button in your profile

  • Posts: The number of unique posts shared to your Instagram feed.

  • Website clicks: The number of taps on the website link in your profile

2. Instagram Analytics Glossary: Feed/Posts

  • Comments: the number of comments for that users have left on the given post. 

  • Engagement: The total number of likes, saves and comments for any given posts. 

  • Engagement Rate: The percentage of people who engaged with your photos. To calculate, take your follower count and divide it by your engagement. This can be calculate per post or overall.

  • Profile Visits: The number of time your profile was viewed after users discovered the post in question

  • Reach: The total number of unique users who have seen the post in question. 

  • Saves: The total number of unique account which saved your post.

  • Likes: The total number of unique users who liked a post 

  • Website clicks: The number of taps on your profile’s website link

  • Following: The number of accounts that you follow

  • Followers: The number of accounts following you 

3. Instagram Analytics Glossary: IGTV

  • Average percentage watched: the average length of your video watched by all of your viewers

  • Views: the number of times users have watched a minimum of three seconds of your IGTV video.

  • Likes: the number of likes your IGTV received from users. 

4. Instagram Analytics Glossary: Story

  • Exits: the number of taps until users leave your Instagram Stories

  • Impressions: total number of times that your Instagram Stories have been viewed

  • Link Opens: The number of times a link on your photo or video was clicked (Swipe Up)

  • Next Story: the number of taps to reach the following account story in the user’s Story queue

  • Replies: the number of replies in response to your particular Instagram Story

  • Tap Backs: the number of taps to view the previous Story

  • Tap Forwards: the number of taps to view the next Story

5. Instagram Analytics Glossary: Advertising

  • Profile visits: the number of times that your profile was viewed.

  • Website clicks: the number of taps on the website found in your profile

  • Clicks to email: the number of times that users have tapped the email button in your business profile.

  • Impressions: the total number of times that all of your posts have been seen

  • Reach: the number of unique accounts that have seen any of your posts.

  • Gender and age:  the gender and age distribution of your followers

  • Location: where your followers are.

  • Followers- hours: the average times that your followers are on Instagram a typical day.

  • Follower-days: the days of the week when your followers are most active.
